Rip and decode mp3s via myspace music player
February 19, 2008I’m always looking for new ways to get my hands on mp3s, this is yet another way, thanks to myspace.
I figured out that there must be a way we can get our hands on the actual mp3 files found on the myspace music player.
All we had to do was decode their site so we are able to grab their mp3s.
For this example, you will need Mozilla Firefox.
- Search for the myspace page of a band or artist. eg: ferry costen
- Visit their profile page. eg: http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=26949175
- Look at the HTML code (CTRL+U in Firefox).
- Find the “mp3player”.
- Find a the “src=”http://lads.myspace.com/music/musicplayer.swf?n=a” line eg: src=“http://lads.myspace.com/music/musicplayer.swf?n=aHR0cDovL211c2ljLm15c3BhY2UuY29t&t=2zZraik8ig5S9ktLf2NZejuI1axbBcWJV1tcidA7Df2ccYSYBeFi1X+rKSaHUvsuu+H+TZdIsFm1/Wos9jKd/Q==&u=LTE=&a=1&d=MjY5NDkxNzVeMTIwMTU0NzE0OA==”
- Get the Live HTTP Headers addon for Firefox and open it to capture mode.
- Visit the URL between the quotes.
- You should see something that looks like this: “http://mediaservices.myspace.com/services/media/musicplayerxml.ashx?b=26949175“.
- Visit the URL
- You will find the “durl” eg: durl=”http://cache02-music01.myspacecdn.com/16/std_8f66fa49e964209826356ce9f579541f.mp3″.
- You will also find the title=”Into The Dark Ferry Fix”, which is useful when saving, to give them real names.
So in case you didn’t notice, all you really need is the “FriendID” and the mediaservices.myspace.com URL, and in future you can access the playlist for any band or artist, and download all the tracks they have on their profile.
It’s worth knowing how to figure it out, in case their system changes.

Bands are signed to record labels. Bands generally make more money from tours and merchandise than from selling records via their record labels.
I encourage you to support their music by going to their shows and buying their merchandise, but there is nothing you or anyone else can do about piracy, it will always exist, as long as there is music.
I have nothing against record labels, if you like the artists that they sign, support them, go to the events they organise, buy their compilations, merchandise, etc. They have their purpose, but it’s not about the music, it’s about marketing.

but what you are doing is still wrong !!so if a band just starts up and HAS there single on itunes and on myspace you think its okay to just some how nick it from myspace and not pay the 90p or so to just buy it from itunes ??????

It’s estimate that for each song that itunes sells, they earn 30% profit from it. The rest is passed onto the record label who then divide it up, and likely give the artist about 10%, depending on the contract and royalties.
So, you see, in the end, that 90p track, is probably worth less than 10p to the artist, thus, it’s better to pay them directly in other ways.

I download mp3s because it’s free. Paying for mp3s is a waste of my money.

TLC had the number 1 hit on the charts, and they were filing for bankruptcy… you dont make money from cds, you make money from shows, and from merchandise. you cant STEAL a shirt off the internet.. CDs actually get music out to the people, they get to know the songs better, and there is ALWAYS a greater chance people will come out and pay to see you if they actually have heard your songs before, and are familiar with them…. so in retrospect, stealing music would HELP most struggling bands…. I was in a band that toured around, and i can vouch for this 100%

I’d rather burn my hard earned $$$ than waste it on wannabe posers who wishes the rockstar lifestyle but can easily cause ear cancer, if there’s such a thing.
I really hope this file sharing phenomenon becomes more accepted, so shitty bands become obsolete and the true artists get their due. Then it’s time for me to part with my money and actually support those that spread real love.
And stop comparing music to some stupid concrete commodity. Try getting yourself some education first, and stop wasting your time on facebook, dumb twats.

OLLIE, I have written and recorded my own songs that I have up on my Myspace profile from about 5 years ago. Since losing my hard drive, and a few cd’s I have no other copies of this music. Is it immoral for me to download my own songs this way? This information is NOT just for pirates…
